Apprentice/ Kennel Technician
By The Dog is Arizona’s Dog Training and Rehabilitation specialist. We are dedicated to do right, by the dog. This position is for an Apprentice Dog Trainer/ Kennel Technician who desires to become a full time dog trainer. This is a dual role, approx. 10 hours are an unpaid Apprenticeship, you are working for knowledge & experience. Approx. 10 hours are as a Kennel Technician at $15/hr. This is a 1099 position for the first 3-6 months of employment and will transition into a W-2 position with promotion to Novice Trainer. (The goal of Apprenticeship: To transition you to a Novice Trainer position with By The Dog).
· Pay is $15/hr | 50% working hours are paid, 50% working hours are apprenticeship
· 8-30 Hrs/ wk – starting
· Experience: No prior experience required; an entry-level position.
· Goal: Develop foundational knowledge and skills through hands-on training and observation to allow for transition to a Novice Dog Trainer position
· Supervision: Works directly with Owner/ Head Trainer.
· 1099 position for 3-6 months, based on growth.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
· Exercise Dogs
· Assist experienced trainers during session
· Set up and tear down training environments
· Provide Enrichment Activities for dogs
· Practice commands and training under direct supervision
· Practice the dogs known skills with them in Lead Trainer’s absence
· Provide Potty Breaks
· Dog Husbandry and Cleaning (ie. Cleaning crates, cleaning up accidents, sanitizing dog related spaces and equipment; etc)
· Monitor and Note Dogs: Health, Stress Levels, Food Acceptance, Bathroom Habits and environmental conditions
· Documenting facts of interactions with dogs (Human accidents/ injury, dog accidents/ injury, Training notes, recommendations; etc)
· Must be able to reliably commute to or live in/ are planning to relocate to Casa Grande, AZ
What YOU Should Expect to Learn in Apprenticeship
· How to speak with clients to communicate dog’s needs and training
· Observe and learn training techniques
· Learn training terminology and jargon
· Learn training philosophy and principles
· Dog Husbandry as it relates to a kennel environment
· Dog Grooming Basics
· Dog Handling Skills
· Training techniques for various types of dogs including reactive, aggressive, fearful and exuberant dogs *By The Dog does NOT take on truly human-aggressive dogs at this time
· Training techniques will include use of positive punishment, positive reinforcement, negative punishment and negative reinforcement. (4-quadrants of operant conditioning)
· How, when and why to apply which training techniques
· Training schedule management
· How to evaluate dogs and clients for what training type will best fit them
· How to evaluate for Assistance Dogs
· How to evaluate for Personal Protection Dogs
· How to acquire social media content
· Personal limitations in dog training and handling
Desired Experience/ Skills, will train the right person:
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Ability to work early morning, evening and/or weekend hours (Scheduled to be determined)
· Ability to work holidays (Scheduled to be determined)
· Must be 18 years of age
· Reliable transportation
· Valid Driver's License (an Arizona Driver's License may be required within 30 days of hire)
· Dog Behavior/ Husbandry Knowledge/ Experience (1yr +)
· Knowledge of ADA law pertaining to Service Dogs (Desired but not required)
· Knowledge of HIPPA as it applies to Service Dogs (Desired but not required)
· Knowledge of Dog Bite Law as it applies to Pets and Personal Protection Dogs (Desired but not required).
