JUNIOR DOG TRAINER
By The Dog is Arizona’s Dog Training and Rehabilitation specialist. We are dedicated to do right, by the dog. This position is for an experienced dog trainer who desires a full schedule. This role will be hitting the ground running immediately after the onboarding period.
*No dogs will be required to go home with lessons trainers. Board and trains will max out at 3 dogs at a time.
· Starting Pay is $23-50/ hour for Lessons (Additional Commissions for sales may be earned) Based on Experience and Execution
· 4 - 15 lessons/ week starting
· Experience: 3-5+ years of professional dog training and handling experience
· Goal: Maintain a high standard of training and contribute to the overall growth of the training team.
· Supervision Level: Minimal; operates autonomously. Reports directly to Owner/ Head Trainer.
· This is a 1099 position for the first 3-6 months of employment and will transition into a W-2 position after the probationary 1099 period.
· Must be able to reliably commute to or live in/ are planning to relocate to Casa Grande, AZ
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
· Educate the client on what to do to achieve wanted behaviors; teach why recommendations are important
· Train dog to fulfill contract promises (Recall, Sit, Down, Loose Leash Walking, Place and Behavioral Modification)
· Documenting facts of interactions with dogs at every lesson (Human accidents/ injury, dog accidents/ injury, Training notes, recommendations; etc)
· Taking photos and videos of sessions with clients for our records and social media accounts
· Commute to and from lessons, classes and events, arriving on time
· Remain current on training protocols and new skills that may be helpful in training
· Work as a team during events and/ or presentations as needed (We historically have done 2 events/ year)
· Lead group lessons, including addressing behavioral issues.
· Educate clients on training techniques and assign follow-up exercises (“Homework”)
· Document progress and maintain training records.
· Handle advanced training and behavioral modification cases.
· Develop customized training plans for each client and complex issues.
· Mentor apprentices and junior trainers.
· Communicate effectively with clients about progress and long-term strategies.
REQUIREMENTS:
· Knowledge of the following: Markers, Slip leashes, dominant dog collars, prong collars, ecollars, proper use of a harness, operant conditioning, the value of relationship between dog and handler in training, power of play and enrichment to training, and how to discern between which of the 4 quadrants to use for behaviors.
· Must be able to train the following: Sit, Down, Come, Heel/Loose Leash walking, Place, leash pressure, stop nuisance behaviors, “stop” puppy behaviors, reactive dogs, fearful dogs, anxious dogs, unmotivated dogs, hyper aroused, high energy dogs, high drive dogs.
· Must be able to reliably commute to all lessons appointments, team meetings and trainings
· Can train any dog we take on including Moderate-Severe Behavioral Mod, Fearful, Anxious, Scentwork, Service Dogs; Etc (* We do not take on truly human aggressive dogs at this time)
· Knowledge of personal limitations in dog training and handling
· Dog Grooming Basics
· Dog Handling Skills
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Ability to work early morning, evening and/or weekend hours (Scheduled to be determined; typical lessons have ranged from 9am to 6pm)
· Ability to work holidays (Scheduled to be determined)
· Must be 18 years of age or older
· Reliable transportation
· Valid Driver's License (an Arizona Driver's License may be required within 30 days of hire)
· Dog Behavior/ Husbandry Knowledge/ Experience
· Knowledge of ADA law pertaining to Service Dogs
· Knowledge of HIPPA as it applies to Service Dogs
· Knowledge of Dog Bite Law as it applies to Pets and Personal Protection Dogs
