NOVICE DOG TRAINER
By The Dog is Arizona’s Dog Training and Rehabilitation specialist. We are dedicated to do right, by the dog. This position is for a Novice Dog Trainer who desires grow into a full time dog trainer. If you have great people skills, a passion for working with dogs and a desire for growth we want YOU. This is a 1099 position for the first 3-12 months of employment and will transition into a W-2 position with promotion to Junior Trainer. (The goal of a Novice Trainer: To transition you to a Junior Trainer position with By The Dog).
*No dogs will be required to go home with novice trainers.
· Pay is $15-18/hr, Based on Experience and Execution
· 8 -20 Hrs/ wk – starting
· Experience: Minimal experience; an entry-level position, you may have completed an apprenticeship or introductory training program.
· Goal: Gain experience handling clients and dogs both in a supportive role and independently for puppy and basic training.
Supervision Level: Moderate-High; Operates with some independence but under the oversight of Owner/ Head Trainer.
· 1099 position for 3-12 months, based on growth and execution. This will transition into a W-2 position with promotion to Junior Trainer.
· Must be able to reliably commute to or live in/ are planning to relocate to Casa Grande, AZ.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
· Build rapport with clients and their dogs.
· Participate in continuing education, mentorship and skill-building.
· Exercise Dogs
· Assist experienced trainers during session
· Set up and tear down training environments
· Provide Enrichment Activities for dogs
· Practice commands and training under direct supervision
· Practice the dogs known skills with them in Lead Trainer’s absence
· Provide Potty Breaks
· Dog Husbandry and Cleaning (ie. Cleaning crates, cleaning up accidents, sanitizing dog related spaces and equipment; etc)
· Monitor and Note Dogs: Health, Stress Levels, Food Acceptance, Bathroom Habits and environmental conditions
· Documenting facts of interactions with dogs (Human accidents/ injury, dog accidents/ injury, Training notes, recommendations; etc)
· Train dog to fulfill contract promises (Recall, Sit, Down, Loose Leash Walking and Place)
· Documenting facts of interactions with dogs at every lesson (Human accidents/ injury, dog accidents/ injury, Training notes, recommendations; etc)
· Taking photos and videos of sessions with clients for our records and social media accounts
· Commute to and from lessons, classes and events, arriving on time
· Gain knowledge of current training protocols and new skills that may be helpful in training
· Work as a team during events and/ or presentations as needed (We historically have done 2 events/ year)
· Learn how to Educate clients on training techniques and assign follow-up exercises (“Homework”)
· Document progress and maintain training records.
· Know personal limitations in dog training and handling
· Must be able to train the following: Sit, Down, Come, Heel/Loose Leash walking, Place, leash pressure,
· Must be able to reliably commute to all lessons appointments and team meetings and trainings
· Dog Handling Skills
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Ability to work early morning, evening and/or weekend hours (Scheduled to be determined; typical lessons have ranged from 9am to 6pm)
· Ability to work holidays (Scheduled to be determined)
· Must be 18 years of age or older
· Reliable transportation
· Valid Driver's License (an Arizona Driver's License may be required within 30 days of hire)
Desired Experience/ Skills, will train the right person:
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· Dog Behavior/ Husbandry Knowledge/ Experience
· Dog Grooming Basics
· Know how to work with undermotivated dogs, hyper aroused dogs and high energy dogs.
· Assist with group lessons.
· Knowledge of the following: Markers, Slip leashes, dominant dog collars, prong collars, ecollars, proper use of a harness.
· Conduct puppy and basic training sessions (e.g., obedience, leash walking, house training) with guidance working up to no supervision
· Handle straightforward behavioral issues under the supervision of a higher-level trainer.
